Synopsis

Cleaner is a high-stakes action thriller directed by Martin Campbell that follows Joey Locke, a former soldier now working as a window cleaner on high-rise buildings in London. When eco-terrorists storm a corporate gala and take 300 hostages, including executives of a corrupt energy company, Joey finds herself uniquely positioned  and perilously exposed  to intervene.

Daisy Ridley carries the film with quiet determination, balancing fragility and grit as she dangles hundreds of feet in the air while trying to save lives. Her chemistry with her younger brother, who is autistic, brings unexpected emotional depth to the action. Their sibling bond adds a genuine human core to a movie that could otherwise lean solely on spectacle.

On the action side, Campbell proves he still knows how to build tension. The set pieces are well-staged, especially those involving vertigo-inducing heights, and there’s a real sense of danger when Joey scales and fights on the building façade. However, some critics point out that the dialogue is often clunky and the plotting feels overly familiar, borrowing heavily from well-worn action film formulas.

In the end, Cleaner is an entertaining popcorn thriller that delivers on excitement but doesn’t leave a lasting impression. Its brisk runtime ensures it stays engaging, and Ridley’s performance is easily the highlight. Fans of classic action films may find it satisfying, but those craving fresh ideas or deeper themes may feel it comes up short.
