Synopsis

Ballerina introduces us to Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas), a Ruska Roma assassin caught between her graceful ballet past and a brutal life of vengeance. The movie is set in the John Wick universe, and Eve’s journey begins when she embarks on a mission to avenge her father’s death. The setup is simple but effective: under the guise of training, she hones her lethal skills while wrestling with the emotional scars of her childhood.

The strength of the film lies in its action choreography. Ana de Armas gives a poised yet ferocious performance, blending elegance and violence in ways that feel uniquely her own. The fight scenes are creatively brutal, and her assassin training is infused with ballet-like precision. The final act, in particular, brings a chaotic, high-energy crescendo where the director leans into over-the-top spectacle, and it works  the stunts are bold, inventive, and often surprising.

However, the movie isn’t without its flaws. The first half drags a bit, weighed down by exposition and a somewhat formulaic revenge plot. Dialogue can feel clichéd, and character development is shallow  Eve’s emotional arc, while present, doesn’t always land as deeply as it could. Some viewers feel it lives too much in the shadow of the John Wick films, lacking the same narrative depth or charisma.

On the whole, Ballerina is a solid addition to the Wick universe. It may not redefine the genre, but it delivers exactly what many action fans crave: stylish violence, a compelling lead, and kinetic set pieces. Its flaws in pacing and story are balanced out by the visual flair and Ana de Armas’s magnetic presence. For viewers who love choreographed combat and high-octane thrills, this spin-off is well worth a watch.
